John Leax was involved in Allegany County's successful struggle to keep New York State from locating its low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) dump in the region. He was a member of Allegany County Nonviolent Action Group (ACNAG) and authored a book, Standing Ground: A Personal Story of Faith and Environmentalism (1991), based on journals he kept during the protest.
